the first season he hunted his new
" spot, " and it wasn't the last action
he'd experience here.
downhill when you called them;
you needed to set up so they could
be called up a hillside.
Not true. We did it time and
time again, and not especially on
purpose.
One hunt found my son and
I scooting around a large tree
trunk on our butts because we had
three longbeards directly above
and behind us, coming straight
down a steep part of the hillside.
I harvested a bird on that hunt
It was very quiet, except for the rain, and
peaceful. I remember being nudged by my
son (I apparently was dozing off between
making occasional calls) and he told me
to look to my left.
There, at about 30 yards, were three
coyotes, staring right at us.
With the fog and low light conditions,
it was eerie and magnificent at the same
time. Their heads were low to the ground,
one of them laying silent on its belly. One
tan, one reddish and the other very dark,
almost black.
It happened so fast, like they came out
of nowhere; we didn't even try to raise
our guns at that point; simply appreciated
the experience.
Another time I remember walking
into The Cabin Woods while still dark,
hunting the morning and walking back
out to find a large set of bear tracks in my
boot tracks. I never saw the bear, so who
knows how close it might have been to
me that morning.
The Cabin Woods taught us many valuable
lessons over the years. For example,
I often was told turkeys wouldn't walk

that ended up being one of the largest
ever taken in The Cabin Woods. I'd also
been told turkeys won't cross creeks and
streams when you call them - also, not
true. The Cabin Woods taught us turkeys
will do what they're inclined to do, with
no regard to our generalizations of their
behavior.
A
COUPLE YEARS AGO, my wife
and I found ourselves looking for
a bigger property and home; ultimately
landing us just into Westmoreland County.
With that move, I needed to find
another " spot " and, luckily, in short order,
gained permission through one of my
neighbors to hunt an old farm property
very near us.
I didn't realize how lucky I was until
the advent of my first spring gobbler
season; taking two birds within three
mornings of hunting.
This past spring found me at the same
spot on this property, harvesting a beautiful
longbeard the first morning. The hunt
started a little slow actually, only hearing
roosted birds at great distances from
