for a few years into developing strong
root systems.
Species like birch, by comparison,
grow " up, " sprouting as tall as they can
as fast as they can.
So replacing an old oak forest with
a new one - and preventing the likes of
birch from taking over - means treating
it in stages. Rather than cutting too many
old trees at once and allowing too much
sunlight to hit the forest floor too soon,
we remove a portion of the less-desirable
trees first. Later, after acorns fall and
geminate, we follow up with a shelterwood,
or partial canopy removal, to let
a little more sunlight in. Finally, when
the new oaks have grown tall enough to
defeat the competition, we do a larger
overstory removal.
We can be more aggressive, opening
the woods to full sunlight much quicker,
when regenerating a maple and cherry
forest.
At the same time, we're using prescribed
fire - on a scale previously
unimaginable - to return the greatest
amount of nutrients to the soil in the
shortest amount of time.
Burns, conducted primarily in spring,
spark growth of the succulent herbaceous
plants deer key on at this time of year, and
they do it on a landscape level. We were
hardly doing any 15 years ago, though.
Compare that to now. We burned more
than 18,000 acres of state game lands
across Pennsylvania in 2021, treating
grassland habitats, shrublands/barrens
habitats and forest habitats. That's huge.
Long term, our goal is to do prescribed
burns on 20,000 acres each year. That's
on top of the nearly 20,000 acres of
forests we're treating with other management
practices.
We're also managing - although not
eradicating - those aforementioned invasive
species where possible. Though we
