That's at least partly a result of the
same inflation driving up prices for everything
from groceries to household goods,
he added. Manufacturers are experiencing
increased production costs in terms of
energy, shipping and warehousing.
It also seems true, though, that ammunition-makers,
distributors and some
retailers are simply charging what the
market will bear, Schultz said. So long as
demand remains high enough that they
can sell all they have, she added, there's
no incentive to drop prices.
Even when they do ultimately fall,
maybe sometime next year, they won't
fall all that far, she predicted.
Schultz used to sell 50-round boxes of
9mm full metal jacket practice ammunition
for $9.99. She believes those days
are gone.
" It's never again going to be in single
digits, " Schultz said. " Never, never, never,
never. It's going to be a push just to get it
under $20. "
" I've never seen prices go back to
where they were, " Grice agreed. " It just
doesn't happen. "
Oliva said it's impossible to know just
what any " new normal " might look like.
There were 18.5 million background
checks in 2021, he noted, the
second-most ever, with
5.4 million first-time
gun buyers. Sales are slower this year,
but remain strong - as of spring, they had
topped 1 million per month for 30 straight
months - with fall's peak-buying season
still ahead.
Russia's attack on Ukraine - with
video showing civilians carrying guns
and fighting in the streets - prompted a
mini-bump in gun and ammunition sales,
too, Edmiston added.
That's worth remembering, Oliva said.
" We expect things to level off below
that high of 21 million background
checks, " he said. " But where is that leveloff
point going to be? Is it going to be
another 18.5 million? It's tough to say.
" That's why I've been telling people, if
you see ammunition, I recommend buying
it now because we don't know what the
future holds. Prices may come down,
they may go back up. You don't want
to find yourself where hunting season
is approaching and you don't have the
ammunition you want. "
Shultz understands that. These days,
she runs her store, in business for 55
years, the same way when it comes to
ammunition.
" I'm proactive, " Schultz said. " I don't
turn down ammo. When my distributors
call me and say 'I've got this, this and this,'
I don't say no, because I don't know what
tomorrow's going to bring. "
After all, you can't buy ammo that
isn't there, no matter how much you earn
selling your grilled cheese.
