The Landowner's Guide to
Opening Days
M
any landowners might not hunt or trap, but they allow hunting and trapping on their
properties, and they're extremely interested in what's in season and when. To help
landowners more clearly see when major hunting seasons open, and better know when to expect
activity on their lands, the Game Commission has developed this guide.
While foxes, coyotes, crows and feral hogs have been hunted on Sundays for years during
open seasons, the three Sundays this fall - Sunday, Nov. 13, Sunday, Nov. 20, and Sunday, Nov.
27 continue to be open to other species that are in season, except for turkeys and migratory
game birds. A Sunday hunting guide is again included in the 2022-23 Pennsylvania Hunting &
Trapping Digest. Those hunting on private land on the three Sundays are required to obtain
and carry written permission from the landowner.
DOVE SEASON - Generally kicks off hunting
seasons; it opens Sept. 1 and runs through Nov.
25; second season runs Dec. 21 through Jan. 7.
DEER, ARCHERY - The statewide start of deer
hunting begins Oct. 1 and runs through Nov. 18,
including Sunday Nov. 13.
SMALL GAME SEASONS - First season segment
starts Sept. 10, includes Sundays Nov. 13 and
20, and continues on and off through late
February.
DEER, ANTLERLESS MUZZLELOADER - The
earliest deer firearms season runs from Oct.
15 through 22.
DEER, ANTLERLESS SPECIAL FIREARMS - The
three-day season starts Oct. 20.
COYOTE, FOX, OPOSSUM, RACCOON, STRIPED
SKUNK and WEASEL TRAPPING - Starts Oct. 22
and closes Feb. 19.
FALL WILD TURKEY - Season openers vary
by wildlife management unit, but most start
on Oct. 29, then continue on and off through
November.
BLACK BEAR, MUZZLELOADER - This statewide
season runs from Oct. 15 through 22.
BLACK BEAR, FIREARMS - Statewide seasons
run Oct. 20 through 22 and Nov. 19 through 22,
including Sunday Nov. 20.
BLACK BEAR, ARCHERY - Starts statewide on
Oct. 15 and lasts until Nov. 5.
MINK and MUSKRAT TRAPPING - Starts Nov.
19 and closes Jan. 8.
DEER, FIREARMS - Starts Nov. 26, includes
Sunday Nov. 27, and concludes Dec. 10.
COYOTES and FOXES (Statewide) Cable
Restraints - Dec. 26-Feb. 19.
BEAVERS (Statewide) TRAPPING - Dec.
17-March 30.
DUCKS, SEA DUCKS, COOTS and MERGANSERS
- Season openers and lengths vary. Lake Erie
Zone - Oct. 31-Jan. 7; Northwest Zone - Oct.
8-Dec. 3 and Dec. 27-Jan. 7; North Zone - Oct.
8-22 and Nov. 15 -Jan. 7; South Zone - Oct. 8-15
and Nov. 22-Jan. 21.
CANADA GEESE - Resident Population Zone
Sept. 1-24 (In western Crawford County and
northwestern Mercer County, the season runs
from Sept. 1-10); Oct. 22-Nov. 25, Dec. 12-Jan.
14, and Feb. 3-25. Atlantic Population Zone
- Sept. 1-24; Nov. 22-25 and Dec. 23-Jan. 21.
SPRING GOBBLER - April 29-May 30, 2023.
WOODCHUCKS, OPOSSUM, STRIPED SKUNKS
and WEASELS - July 1-June 30. No closed
hunting season, with certain exceptions during
big-game seasons.
COYOTES, No closed hunting season, with
certain exceptions during big-game seasons.
