Ripening Rut

Clickity, clickity, clickity, clack.
The crossbow's limbs bend as I crank
the cocking device, then slip the handle
snugly back into its holder and make sure
it won't rattle.
I shot my first deer with a Bear Kodiak
Magnum recurve, and stuck with it for
years, using wooden arrows with feather
fletchings. Now, my bow is a compound
crossbow topped with a scope.
With a recurve, I'd limit myself to shots
within 25 yards. Today, if conditions are
right, I'll shoot out to 30. But with the
leaf-covered trees and greenbrier tangles,
it's more likely I'll need the deer closer.
I shove all those thoughts to the back
of my mind and focus on the hunt. I walk
slowly to my hillside blind, a lesson
learned after being busted a time or two
when I stormed in too fast.
Each day is a learning experience, or a
chance to hone learned skills.
My blind has been in place for two
weeks, in hopes deer will become accustomed
to it. It's properly tagged as
required by law.
After a thorough check, I slowly unzip
the entrance and slip inside. I settle into
my chair, get my crossbow ready to shoot
and adjust my shooting stick, which has
a rubberized top to help dampen noise.
Then, amusingly, I take time to relax.
I'm often tense and anxious immediately
after I enter my blind, and I relax my
shoulders. It isn't until hours later that a
deer slips into the field.
The mature doe stands stock-still, surveying
the scene. Two fawns scamper by
Autumn's advance drives change.
