Infrequent Flyer
I spent one year on the high school track team and, though a distance runner, was
well aware long jumpers don't compete in orange and brown canvas jackets and heavy
lug-soled boots.
So even years later, it should have been obvious this was a bad idea.
We were small game hunting on a flood-control property. There's a brushy creek
bottom flat that holds rabbits and pheasants, flanked by an oak-and-hickory bench that
holds gray and fox squirrels as reliably as a refrigerator does magnets.
It's a treasured spot, partly because access issues limit competition, at least a little. You
must cross two creeks to reach the best hunting.
One's a narrow little thing; three steps on mostly exposed rocks and you're over.
The other is wider - 40 feet, maybe - and usually about boot-top high. It can be much
deeper, though. Twice we even arrived there to find the entire area under water.
This autumn day it was swampy from recent rains. The creek had receded a bit, but
navigating it clearly would entail some degree of soaking.
The real challenge, though, figured to be just reaching the water. The creek's banks
are tall and steep - inpassably cliff-like - in places. Even the milder approaches typically
feature a yards-wide band of mud churned to muck by frequent horse traffic. Things were
especially sloppy now.
But the heart wants what the heart wants.
So we conceived a plan. If we could leap off the bank and over the quagmire extending
from it to splash down in the water beyond, the rest would be relatively easy. We'd worry
about how to get back later.
Not young, but young enough to think this just might work, I unloaded my shotgun,
retreated a few steps, got a running start and sprung.
Not well enough. I was airborne, but losing altitude fast, when it became obvious there
hadn't been enough juice in my giddy-up at launch. I wasn't gonna make it.
Raise your arm high above your head. Extend your index finger, stiffening it like the
backbone of a condemned man walking to the gallows, but determined to show no fear.
Then, with speed, plunge it directly down into a generous bowl of mocha pudding.
That's how I stuck, upright, with an emphatically squishy, grippy, gloppy glurp. No
high-flying gymnast ever ended a routine by anchoring themselves better.
I couldn't lift my feet. Only by rocking back and forth, falling on my seat twice and
my side once, was I able to pry free.
We hunted all day, me covered in mud that warm sun turned into a hard shell, like
that on a dipped ice cream cone. It was a high price to pay for what turned out to be a
modest day's take.
But it was worth it, as most time afield is. Still, my leaping days are over. If you can't
land you shouldn't fly.
