thermos now was nothing more than
frozen brown ice. My hand-warmers
were no longer toasty, and that wind
kept gusting, shrinking visibility to less
than 30 yards.
" Was a buck worth all of this? " I
asked myself.
But Karl and I seemed determined to
out-wait the other - at least for a little
longer.
As 3:30 slipped by, Karl looked at
me, shrugging his shoulders and turning
up his hands.
The hardwoods were creaking and
swaying, and it was time to make a
decision.
" OK, " I said, " I've had enough! "
Karl laughed, then replied, " I was
hoping you would say that, so let's get
out of here. "
Getting up was no easy task, and
we barely made it up to the lower log,
where we sat, trying to get the feeling
back in our extremities.
It was then that Karl poked me.
" Here he comes, " he whispered.
The wind had died down a bit. I held
my breath as the brown shape moved
closer.
It was a lone deer, and without the
snow blowing, I could make out his
rack - it was the 8-point.
I knew that if I didn't make the perfect
shot, all the excruciating time spent
out here would be in vain. I carefully
slid the flintlock back across the upper
log and waited until the buck was within
20 yards. He turned broadside, and all
I could do was hope and pray that the
flintlock would fire.
I slowly squeezed the trigger and
waited for the pan to ignite.
I saw the flint strike a spark, then
waited for the gun to go off. Through

the smoke, I saw the buck flinch, then
turn and run. We both watched him fall
within 30-yards.
Then, as I always have, I went over
and knelt beside him, giving thanks for
this magnificent animal.
As I field-dressed my buck, I shoved
my hands deep into the body cavity,
amazed at how warm it was. While I
worked on the deer, Karl called his sonin-law
to help bring it out.
I was surprised at how quickly he
showed up, and even more surprised
when he picked up the buck and slung
it over his shoulders. I draped an orange
vest over it, then we followed his trail
to Karl's pickup.
Then after all of that effort, he left
as quick as he came. When I called him
later to thank him, his response was
simple: " You guys are crazy! "
On the way back to Karl's, we
stopped for coffee, hoping it would
help warm us. Drinking it, I finally felt
