Developing Middle Creek would
require buying out 63 families who owned
property - none of it " Class I, " or highest
quality farmland, which was a consideration
- nearby. That started in 1965. The
state, under authorization by Gov. William
Scranton, acquired the lands of holdouts
using eminent domain a year later.
Four of those families took the issue to
court, and it took until 1972 for the Game
Commission to get their properties.
Work got underway in the meantime.
To jump-start a Canada goose population,
the Game Commission dug several
ponds on site in 1966 and built an
80-acre Canada goose holding pen along
Hopeland Road, in front of what would
become the Visitors Center. Another pen
followed in 1967 in the northeast section
of the property. Fifteen pairs of geese from
Pymatuning were introduced into each.
Thereafter, fields were contoured,
dikes built to support wetlands, farm
ponds and other small dams and potholes
built. Construction of Middle Creek's
main 360-acre lake started in 1971 and

Plenty has changed over the 50 years
Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area
has been open to the public.
For one, the landscape looks a bit
different. There is less planted corn and
millet fields than there used to be, and
many fields are now loaded with native
wildflowers and grasses. Today there is
a patchy mosaic of many natural habitat
types. Many of our fields and forests are
managed with prescribed fire.
Many people from all backgrounds
and walks of life enjoy family fun, solace,
excitement and much more on Middle
Creek's nearly 6,000 acres. School children
visit for programs, and special
events such as the Wildlife Art Show
and National Hunting and Fishing Day
draw crowds.
In celebrating 50 years of conservation
at Middle Creek, I'm excited about
what the next 50 years in wildlife conservation
will bring. Whether you've never
visited, haven't visited in a while, or are
a regular, we will be happy to see you
during our 50th year!
Aside from the annual snow-goose
migration, there's always a reason to visit
Middle Creek.

" Spring Turkey Hunting in Pennsylvania, "
a seminar with five-time World
Turkey Calling Champion Matt Morrett on
Wednesday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the
auditorium, and " The Science of Antler
Growth and How to Hunt Antler Sheds "
on Saturday, March 11 at 2 p.m. at the
Visitors Center, 100 Museum Road,
Stevens, Pa.

Middle Creek Environmental Education Specialst
In seeking to create the " Pymatuning of the
East " several southeastern Pennsylvania sites
were considered, but Middle Creek won out.
Construction of a dam that would create
Middle Creek's 360-acre lake, far left, began in
1971. In turn, the facility's Visitors Center soon
saw its grand opening, seen at left.
