TWO IN TWO

It was early in the morning, but getting
late in the season as I set out in the
dark May 20 in Forest County, Wildlife
Management Unit 2F.
I was headed for a wooded ridge
that had been filled with gobbling in
recent weeks.
The day dawned still and clear. I
made a barred owl call and immediately
a gobbler responded from a few
hundred yards away.
I made a few soft yelps, but never
seemed to grab the gobbler's interest.
Eventually, he flew down and went
silent.
But before long, additional gobbling
indicated a bird was coming my
direction.
This one seemed interested in my
yelps, but he stayed on the ridge below
me, drumming and crunching leaves as
he walked, remaining out of sight. He
was probably waiting for the " hen " he
heard to go to him.
When he started drifting off, I made
a series of fighting purrs.
He gobbled back.
So, too, did two other toms off to my
right - and that did it.
Within minutes, those two gobblers
were coming fast. Too fast. Birds were
on me before I could turn around.
So, switching the 12-gauge to my
left shoulder, I put the head of the first
gobbler in the green dot scope's circle,
just as he emerged from behind a hemlock
at 35 yards.

The gun roared and the gobbler went
But my season, as it turns out, wasn't
over.
Weeks earlier, before opening day, I
bought a Stevens single-shot .410 that's
designed to be used with tungsten shot.
I added a red dot scope to it.
This was the gun I took to Allegheny
County in WMU 2B on Memorial Day.
SECONDS, PLEASE
Another early morning led to hearing
five gobblers with a hen.
She answered my calls, suggesting
she might join me. But, ultimately, she
drifted off with the gobblers in tow.
Later that afternoon, while enjoying
the holiday with family, I thought about
the next morning, which would open
the final day of the season.
I hiked back to the same roosting
area, but this time from the opposite
side, anticipating birds would travel the
same direction as previously.
This time, there didn't seem to be
