and settled in at the base of a big poplar
tree, just past the entanglement.
Finally, everything in place, I yelped
softly. A hen behind me answered immediately,
just over the lip of the bench. I
had only enough time to spin around the
tree and get settled as she moved my way.
My position was less than ideal,
though. Just feet away was a toppled
tree, hung up on another, caught about a
foot-and-a-half in the air. It was going to
be tough to get a shot at any gobbler more
than a few feet from me in that direction.
But I would play the hand I was dealt
to the end.
The hen came to the log, ducked under
it and stopped literally at my feet. She
knew something was amiss but couldn't
decide what. She purred hard and flew up
on the downed log for a better view.
That's when I saw the gobbler.
He was standing behind the log, visible
only from the top of his beard up. He
presented a mostly good target, though his
head was directly between the legs of the
hen still calling curiously from the log.
My gun was in position, but I needed the
hen to move. All I could do was will her
to get out of the way and hope it worked.
Finally, she took a few steps to the
right. My shot path now clear, I pulled the
trigger, causing 10 or 12 turkeys on my
right - previously unnoticed - to take off
in a flurry of wings
My only thought, though, was of the
gobbler that should be laying on the other
side of the log. A bright white spot on a
birch tree just behind the log, where my
shot pattern hit, marked where the turkey
had been.
And he was still there, too, and
down.
Sitting on the same log the hen
had, filling out my tag, then attaching
it to his leg, I admired this gobbler
the way I have so many others
from Penn's Woods. The bird was
most of the way toward being a year
old, judging from his weight and
3-inch beard. But what a memory
he gave me. It was such a great hunt.
That's why I consider jakes
trophies, too.
NO SMALL THRILL
My 50th Pennsylvania gobbler
was a jake, as well. It, too, is etched
in my memory for a lot of reasons.
The author's 50th Pennsylvania spring
gobbler, left, was a jake and it mattered
as much to him as any longbeard on the
list. The same goes for his 2022 gobbler.
While wet turkeys might not make for
great photos, this image will always
remind him of an incredible hunt.
