the same way. We hunted the first four
Saturdays but had no turkey to show
for our efforts.
On the last Saturday, though, after
not seeing or hearing anything early,
two gobblers came right out of the
woods and up to our decoys shortly
after 9:30. Adam stayed calm and
nailed one.
If that was exciting, this was even
better. The next spring, we heard toms
gobbling on the roost on opening day.
We weren't in our blind an hour when
two of them came to us from behind.
We waited patiently as they moved
around to our front.
When they did, Adam shot at the biggest
one and it went right down. The bird
weighed 23 pounds and had a 10-inch
beard.
What a proud moment for an 11-yearold
- and an even prouder moment for me!
Now it was time for a deer.
Adam's other grandpa also bought
him a .243 rifle. We put a 3-9x scope
on it and practiced through the summer.
We then traveled to Perry County,
where Adam's grandfather owned some
land and had several tree stands set up,
for opening day of the special firearms
deer season for junior license holders.
A few does came by early, but they
offered no shots. Then in the afternoon
a big doe walked toward us and
stopped 130 yards away. When she
turned broadside, I nudged Adam to
take a shot.
He connected. We found the deer
30 yards from where it stood when he
shot. He was a happy camper that day.
That same year he went out during
the regular firearms deer season and got
a 4-point buck.
The following year, he got another
doe, then an 8-point buck at more
than 200 yards. I think I was more
excited than he was.
When Adam turned 12, I finished
building that flintlock rifle.
The gun has a 38-inch barrel and
weighs only 7 pounds. We took
it out many times during the
summer and practiced shooting
and loading it until Adam was
confident in his shooting.
When muzzleloader season
opened, we returned to Perry
County. Late that afternoon, a doe
walked toward us, turning to stop
and offer a clear shot at 35 yards.
Adam put a ball right behind her
shoulder. The deer went about 25
yards and dropped.
I was proud, to be sure. Little
did I know when buying that plank
of curly maple what adventures we
would enjoy together.
