a beautiful 8-point. Samuel and my
daughter Abby helped me drag it out of
the woods. Since my buck tag was filled,
Samuel asked if he could sit in my tree
stand. Of course, I said he could sit wherever
he wanted.
Samuel headed for it the evening
of Oct. 15, while I went to a different
property in hopes of filling a doe tag. In
exchanging text messages, Samuel said
three does were feeding in the clover,
with two shooter bucks sparring just out
of his crossbow range. I said a quick
prayer asking that he'd get a chance at
one of them.
Forty-five minutes went by without
another text. When my phone finally
vibrated, there was a message from
Samuel that simply read, " I need help
dragging my buck! " My heart raced as I
thanked God for answered prayers.
Samuel was waiting for me when I
pulled into the driveway, confident the
deer went down in the overgrown clover
field. Abby was there, too, ready to help
us track it. We piled into my car and drove
to the property.
While walking in, Samuel showed me
where the deer was when he shot.
We followed the blood trail and, after
50 yards, I spotted the buck in the tall
grass. Abby gave Samuel a huge hug, then
Samuel turned and gave me one.
" This is my sixth buck in six years! "
he whispered, still squeezing me.
I laughed out loud as he finally let
me go.
Samuel and Abby dragged the deer
to my car. Once back home, Samuel and
I started skinning it, me savoring every
minute of our time together. We quartered
the deer and put him on ice before Samuel
went inside to shower. I stood in the darkness,
looking at the stars in the sky, tears
filling my eyes while remembering all
the hunts we'd shared. Mixed emotions,
joy and sadness, flooded my soul. I was
delighted Samuel kept his streak alive, yet
also saddened at the thought he might not
be able to hunt with me next year.
I snuck into the house, not wanting
to spoil the mood with my sadness, and
after a refreshing shower went to Samuel's
room. He was getting ready for bed, so I
stopped to say good night. The blue LED
lights in his room made his whitetail deer
mounts look alive.
" Thank you, Dad, for giving me some
of the most amazing memories! " he said
from the edge of his bed.
" You're welcome, " I said with a wink,
then closed the door.

Laying in the darkness of my own
room, I thanked God for all the special
moments with my son. As the words of
my prayer rolled off my lips, my heavy
heart felt light and warm as I drifted off
to peaceful sleep. My son was just like
his dad!
