In elk season, though, he works for
all of the state's main outfitters and lots
of do-it-yourself elk hunters, dragging
otherwise hard-to-move bulls and cows
to the trucks and trailers that ultimately
carry them to the state's elk check station.
Armstrong's call for help was his first
this day. He trailered Friday, a 1,900pound
black Percheron that stands about
18 hands high - that's roughly 6 feet at the
withers, or the ridge between the shoulder
blades at the base of the neck - to the
game lands.
He harnessed the horse and hitched
him to a homemade " scoot. " It's a toboggan
of sorts, made from three blue plastic
55-gallon barrels cut in half lengthwise
and laid end to end, all atop a section of
guardrail that curls up at the front. That
steel keeps the barrels from wearing
through when drug over gravel, stone
and rock.
It's heavy, weighing somewhere
between 200 and 300 pounds. Perrine
doesn't use it on every occasion. If an
elk is down in thick timber, for example,
he might have Friday drag it without the
scoot.
But that's as much a matter of maneuverability
as weight. It's nothing for
Friday to haul half a ton on his own.
" A good working horse, they have to
be willing to pull, " Perrine said. " But if
they're willing, when they hit weight, they
just walk off and go with it.
" That part never gets old. It's fun. "
And not just for him. Armstrong, who
uses Perrine multiple times each year,
said hunters love to see the horse work; it
adds to the experience that is, for many,
one they'll never repeat.
Plus, it saves an awful lot of backbreaking
work.
Hunters can, if they choose, quarter
elk and pack it out and to the check sta20
tion.
Most prefer to take their animals out
whole, though.
That's rough, even in cases like this
one.
" It would take the rest of the day to get
it out, " Armstrong said. " We're a mile and
half in from here, where we're standing.
This elk is a 600-pound animal. And it's
dead weight. So it's not easy. There's no
easy way to get these elk out of anywhere,
quite frankly.
" It's five times your best whitetail,
that's what I tell people. Plus, the rack is
huge and it wants to catch on everything
when you're trying hard not to damage it. "
Using Friday to do the job " just works, "
he noted.
