masked the mass. But up close, I could tell
there was some girth at the bases.
The Giant chased does around my tree
all evening, but I never picked up my bow
to try to fill one of my antlerless tags.
I was too busy watching The Giant.
Two nights later, he came through
the woods behind my stand and walked
within easy bow range again. I hoped he
lived until next fall and did the same thing.
By October 2020, I figured I had this
buck somewhat pegged. For whatever
reason, he showed up in my area around
Halloween, and hung around pretty regularly
for at least a month. I also figured out
that he liked moving in the rain.
While I still didn't have any daylight
pictures of him, I got most of my pictures
of him on rainy nights.
So I set my cameras again and waited
for The Giant to show.
On Oct. 30, 2020, I checked them at
11 a.m. during a steady rain to see if I had
any pictures.
At a scrape The Giant loved, where
I always posted a camera, I kicked the
leaves away to expose the dirt.
My cameras showed no sign of The
Giant on that trip.
However, when I made another camera
run a week later, I discovered The Giant
was just about two hours behind me on
that rainy day.
He followed me past three of my cameras,
stopping for a long time at the scrape.
There's a photo of me kicking away the
leaves at 11:07 a.m., then pictures of the
buck standing in the exact same spot
starting at 12:49 p.m. My tree stand hung
empty 25 yards away.
That year, The Giant lost mainframe
points, but gained some serious mass. He
now carried just eight points on his beams,
plus several stickers at the bases. The G-2s
had to be pushing close to 20 inches and
the G-3s were in the 15-inch range.
As an 8-pointer, this buck was an
absolute giant. Photos like the one at the
beginning of this column might not look
real. But they are.
By now, I figured this buck had to be
at least 6.5 years old, an ancient deer for
the area where I hunt. And clearly, he was
smart to have survived that long, although
the daylight photos my cameras captured
got me thinking he might be slipping,
which meant I might have a chance to
take him.
I happened to be off work on Friday,
Nov. 13, and a light rain was falling.
This is my chance! I thought as I
sprinted out the door to begin hunting
around noon.
Around 1:30, a little 6-pointer walked
directly beneath my stand on a path
headed straight away from my tree.
At about 4 p.m., I heard a noise through

The buck dubbed The Giant first appeared on the
author's trail camera in 2017 as a solid 10-point.
The buck's rack underwent transformations in
subsequent years, and in 2019 lost a G-2, but
added a sticker point. By November, though, its
entire right antler was broken off at the base.
