Harry and the Gobblers
H
ARRY was the most unassuming hunter I ever met. He pursued turkeys every
day of the season, and passed on more gobblers than he harvested.
Yet, he still got his turkey every year.
Harry never shot a jake either. But at the same time, I never heard him brag about
how long the beards were on his longbeards, or about the size of their spurs.
The man just loved being " out there. "
Whenever we hunted together, he reminded me our pace would be unhurried, our
steps deliberate, as we traipsed through the woods, always stopping and surveying
our surroundings. I didn't mind at all because I always looked forward to spending
time with Harry.
One memory of my friend particularly stands out - the day I harvested a northwoods
gobbler he called in for me.
We hunted for hours and saw birds seemingly ripe for the taking. But Harry shook
his head " no " more times than I could count whenever I suggested pulling the trigger.
So, when the gobbler I ultimately took home finally appeared, I was thrilled to get
the " go-ahead " nod from him! It was a beautiful longbeard with impressive spurs.
Harry didn't hunt deer because, suffering from black lung disease, he knew he
would never be able to drag a deer out of the woods. I often offered to help if he did
get one, but he didn't worry about that.
To Harry, gobblers were the No. 1 game animal.
He was once checked by a game warden who saw his vehicle parked in the same
lot every day for close to a week. Harry said the warden was a polite young man who
asked if he was seeing any birds.
" Yes, " Harry replied, " that is why I'm here. "
Harry is gone now, but I often wonder what he would
think of being able to take two birds in one season. One
bird always seemed enough for him.
He remains in my thoughts often, especially at this time
of year, which I love. The earth is like a sponge beneath my
feet and the leaves are turning green. If I breathe deeply, I
can smell the new birth of the outdoor world. Spring is
still holding on, even though summer officially begins this
month.
As the sun slips into the envelope of the mountain, I
emerge from the forest. I smile, hopeful that more days like
this will be in my future and, of course, I think of Harry.
