Marcelina asserts. The pub promotes all sports in its décor but
emphasizes the nearby Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Sheraton Springfield Monarch Place Hotel is one of the
few hotels with a full-scale fitness facility onsite that includes
steam rooms, saunas and racquetball courts. Marcelina estimates that up to 80 percent of the hotel’s occupancy on weekdays is corporate, and 90 percent on weekends is leisure
travelers. The Sheraton Springfield is owned by Columbus Hotels, which also owns two Hilton Garden Inns.
Before renovation of the hotel began, a single room was remodeled so Starwood, which owns the Sheraton brand, could
make any required changes in it to match the Sheraton style.
Employees of the Sheraton Springfield are trained thoroughly in the Sheraton brand. “They go through a very intense
orientation process,” Marcelina says. “There’s a lot of options
out there nowadays. We truly need to ensure that we are engaging and we value the guest. We treat feedback as a gift, and
we create a memorable experience at every opportunity.”

“It creates a unique problem for wireless Internet,”
Marcelina says. “In a typical hotel with a floor, you log onto the
Internet and your computer looks for the access point on your
floor. That is the only one it sees. With an atrium-style hotel,
you have several options to pick up an access point. Sometimes that can be problematic. We have a wireless system in
the building designed for atrium-style hotels that is state-ofthe-art, high speed and secure.”

NEW RESTAURANTS
Along with the remodeling of the Sheraton Springfield in a
more contemporary style, the hotel discontinued a white
tablecloth restaurant in favor of two new concepts following
recent trends. “There was more of a desire for family friendly
fun, a lively atmosphere,” Marcelina observes. “That’s where
Picks came into place. Picks is a restaurant where you literally
take an entree and pick a different accompaniment, a different
sauce or a different burger topping. We bake our own breads.
It’s comfort food at its best.”
The other concept is MVP Pub, a sports bar with pub food
that replaced a bar with a casino theme. “The MVP Pub has a
