HIGH-TECH HOTEL
“Technology is going to shape the way we deliver service,”
Wiley predicts. Indeed, when people are traveling they expect
the same technology they access at home and at work. This includes fast and reliable Internet connections, sophisticated TV
entertainment, high-tech meeting solutions featuring multiple
tech devices at the same time, and the use of social media to
communicate directly with the host property.   
To that end, the Westin Buckhead Atlanta is adding more Internet services. It recently upgraded infrastructure adding significant bandwidth and strengthening signals property wide.
The hotel also is communicating with guests in more modern
ways. Guests want instant responses to their requests and feedback so access to property email and text addresses is a necessity.  Visitors will use social media avenues such Facebook,
TripAdvisor, Twitter and Instagram to communicate and response times should be immediate.  
Westin Buckhead Atlanta recently installed Salto Systems’
RFID room lock system. This allows guests to use their room entrance key cards for hotel purchases. In addition, it tracks service usage for hotel data.
“It is much more sophisticated than the old magnetic key system,” Wiley says. As a door-lock system is an expensive investment, it may take other hotels some time to catch up to this
latest high-tech door-lock system, but Wiley notes the industry
as a whole is moving in this direction, allowing for keys to be
used throughout the hotel environment in different applications.
It has “wonderful safety and security features for the property” since RFID technology is not easily compromised and
does not fail as frequently as magnetic keys. Security reporting
is real time and more detailed. The ability to limit or allow access is also more dynamic.
Frequent guests to Westin Buckhead Atlanta are issued permanent FOB keycards they retain in their possession. The small
security hardware device has built-in authentication used to
control and secure access to network services and data.
Before arrival, guests are sent their room number and do not
have to stop at the front desk to check in. They can update their
keys at a hot spot instead. These key card readers are located on
