There are many ferry companies,
but the HMS Ferries Division of HMS
Global Maritime Co. sets itself apart
with the experience it offers customers. "We like to think we're the recognized experts in the vessel management arena within the United States,"
HMS Ferries President and COO Greg
Dronkert declares.
Based in Bainbridge, Wash., the division transports passengers, vehicles and
other cargo across inland and coastal
waterways. Its parent company began
as part of Hornblower Cruises & Events,
but broke off on its own in 1994.
Since then, the company has filled a
niche operating high-speed vessels for
various customers, including ferries in
the Bahamas, Alaska and Trinidad. "We
also operate a high-speed craft for [the
U.S.] Military sea command that has
been in service since 2010," Dronkert
adds. "We are considered subject matter
experts in regard to high-speed crafts."
HMS Ferries' client base includes
departments of transportation, cities
and municipalities, port and transit
authorities and counties. "Our model for
our ferry division is ship management,
where the assets belong to the owners,"
he says. "We have the expertise to operate, maintain and repair those assets."

// HMS Ferries serves departments of
transportation, cities and municipalities,
port and transit authorities and counties.

For example, Pierce County in
Washington has outsourced its ferry
operation and maintenance completely
to HMS Ferries. "We provide the crews
for the boats, the people that stage the
cars in the parking lot, and the engineers
that provide the maintenance and repair
sources," Dronkert says.
HMS Ferries' clients also include a
small percentage of private operators.
However, "Any true ferry that is routine
day in and day out needs to be subsidized,"
he says. "Private operators don't get into
an area where they need to subsidize it."
Key Elements
HMS Global has enjoyed substantial
growth over the years. "We were probably a $25 million company 10 years ago,"
Dronkert recalls, noting that the company's sales have grown to $100 million.

One factor in that growth is its
approach to the market. "We have the
mindset of an operator," he says, noting
that its senior associates have backgrounds in hospitality with companies
such as Spirit Cruises in St. Louis.
"Our decisions are made around our
direct, hands-on knowledge," he adds.
"We're also not just running boats, but
we really strive to give the riders of the
vessels a pleasurable experience."
HMS Global also has a high tolerance
