Doug Ferriman, founder of
Boston-based Crazy Dough's
Pizza, will lead workshops
titled "Know to Grow: The
Nuts & Bolts of Opening New
Stores" (October 3 from 9-11:30
a.m.) and "Aligning with Investors" (October 4 from 9-11:30
a.m.). We caught up with him
to learn more about what he's
planning for PPNE.
PT: What specifically do you
hope attendees get from your
workshops?
DF: I hope my attendees walk
away with one or two "Philosophical Impressions" and two or three
"Operational Impressions" that
make an immediate impact on
their life and business. As I explain
to our team here in Boston and
extended pizza family at Expo....
we are in the Impression Business
and pizza is the medium for which
to make that impression. If you
consistently make positive impressions, you will have a positive
business. Our purpose is to "Push
the Craft" - which means constantly elevate your culture first,
quality, technique, service etc. in
order to stay out on the frontier of
innovation and relevance.
PT: Do you remember what it
was like when you were in their
shoes?
DF: I do, and to a large extent
I will always keep myself in their

shoes. To me, one of the keys to
being a successful entrepreneur
is humility, and my go-to saying
is: "if you're not humble, you will
crumble"!
PT: How difficult is it to open a
new store?
DF: Opening a new store can
be very difficult or it can be very
seamless, it all comes down to one
thing: how strong your culture is.
PT: What are some of the most
necessary traits one should possess or develop if they're serious
about growth?
DF: No. 1: Humility. Stay on the
bottom in order to push everyone
around you up!
No. 2: Unstoppable will power.
No matter how many times you get
knocked down, get right back up.
PT: What most inspires you
about the new crop of pizza makers you encounter?
DF: Creativity with different
pizza styles. You're seeing such a
wide array of styles today (Detroit,
Grandma, Neapolitan, etc.), and
how those styles are being utilized
to create innovation. I can't
remember the man's name, but
someone served me a Detroit slice
with an amazing cheese crust at
PPNE last year and my mind was
blown!
