PKD Life - Summer 2021 - 19

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMIE DAVIS
Diagnosed with PKD in her
20s, Jacque English took
COVID-19 precautions
seriously, but found ways
to make staying home fun
for her daughters.
are home in virtual school,
Jacque is a stay-at-home
mom, and Mike works from
home for now.
The English family
decided, however, that they
could still have a safe connection
to the outside world just
by getting a little creative.
One of the casualties of this
forced isolation was that
Jacque had to go off tolvaptan
because she couldn't safely
visit the labs for her monthly
bloodwork. However, she
and her doctor discovered a
mobile lab that will come to
her house and draw blood,
enabling her to go back on
the medication.
The family also fi gured
out how to continue seeing
Jacque's father, Bob, who lives
three blocks away and was
used to spending time with
them daily. Fortunately, he
has a big backyard, so the
kids and Jacque bike over
and play outside when the
weather is nice. In the winter,
they sledded down the hill in
his backyard as he watched
from his deck. " He also did
FaceTime bedtime stories
with both of my kiddos from
time to time. My emerging
reader loved practicing by
reading him stories over the
computer, " Jacque says.
A former teacher, Jacque
has discovered other ways to
keep the family engaged. At
the end of school last year,
they made summer fun bags
full of things like bubbles,
balloons, and a blow-up
beach ball, which the girls
then " ding-dong ditched "
at neighbors' doors. For the
girls' birthdays, they got a
snow cone truck to drive in a
birthday parade in the neighborhood.
" We take a lot of
hikes and listen to an online
story hour with a library out
of California. We even found
an online interactive magic
show, " Jacque says.
The neighbors have joined
in on the fun, hiding Easter
eggs in each other's yards
and turning the annual culde-sac
Christmas party into a
virtual Zoom party with wine
and dessert. Secret Santas
dropped off gifts beforehand,
which attendees unwrapped
on screen.
" I don't think we'll ever
take our neighbors and family
for granted again. We all
support and check in on each
other and have maintained
that for a long time. In a lot
of ways, it's been really heartwarming, "
Jacque says.
