What
Is PKD?
* Polycystic kidney
disease is a chronic
genetic disease
that causes uncontrolled
growth of
cysts in the kidney,
often leading to
kidney failure.
There are two types
of PKD.
* ADPKD, or autosomal
dominant PKD, is estimated to
aff ect more than 600,000 Americans and
12.4 million people worldwide. It is the
fourth-leading cause of kidney failure.
* ARPKD, or autosomal recessive PKD, is a rare
form of PKD that occurs in 1 in 25,000
children worldwide.
* Typical kidneys are the size of a human fi st,
and each weighs about a third of a pound.
Polycystic kidneys can grow to be footballsized,
weighing 30 pounds each.
* There is no cure, but with recent advancements
in research, there is hope.
