Awareness
Know the Signs of
Heat-Related Illness
B eing outside in the summer is great, but the heat can creep up on
you and cause potentially dangerous symptoms. Here's how to recognize
symptoms of the two most serious types of heat-related illness,
and what you should do.
HEAT EXHAUSTION
Symptoms:
* Excessive sweating
* Cold, clammy skin
* Fast, weak pulse
* Muscle cramps
* Headache
* Dizziness or fainting
What to do:
* Move to a cool place.
* Sip water slowly.
* Use cool cloths or take a
cool bath to reduce body
temperature.
* Get medical help if the person
is vomiting or if symptoms
worsen or last longer than
an hour.
HEATSTROKE
Symptoms:
* Headache
* Dizziness
* Nausea
* Confusion
* Body temperature of
103 degrees or higher
* Fast pulse
* Fainting
What to do:
* Call 911-heatstroke is
an emergency.
* Do not give the person anything
to drink, as fluids may
enter the lungs.
* Use cool cloths to lower the
person's temperature while
you wait for help.
Prevention
HOW TO STAY
WELL-HYDRATED
IN THE SUMMER
Drinking plenty of fluids in the
summer is especially important if
you have PKD, but water can get
boring after a while. Here are three
ways to stay hydrated if you're not
a fan of plain H2O.
* Add flavor to water or seltzer
with a squeeze of lemon or lime, or drink flavored versions.
* Eat fruits and vegetables that are high in water content, such
as watermelon, strawberries, celery, and cucumbers-or whip
up a smoothie.
* Treat yourself to popsicles and sorbet (but these shouldn't be
your main source of hydration).

" I am extremely
grateful for having
received a preemptive
kidney
transplant from
an anonymous
deceased hepatitis
C donor four years
ago. My life has
been extended
and I've been
allowed to thrive.
I can also be with
my family and
friends to enjoy all
the moments and
milestones in our
lives together. "

WHAT ARE YOU
MOST GRATEFUL
FOR RIGHT NOW?
" I am most grateful
for the people who
came alongside
me in my journey
for a preemptive
kidney transplant.
Miraculously, my
husband of over
30 years was an
outstanding match
(in more ways than
one), and the surgery
went perfectly. What
a true gift of love. "
-Diane Siebrasse, Chapel
Hill, North Carolina
" What I am most
grateful for right now
are the scientists who
are publishing on
pig kidney, artificial
kidney, and even
transforming human
kidneys to supply the
demand for kidney
replacement. The
recent advances
are the result of
decades of hard work
by thousands of
dedicated scientists.
I am equally grateful
for the seven people
who recently stepped
forward as potential
live donors for me,
as these advances
are going to be just a
little too late for my
timeline. "

Leandro, California
