blue from the rock and Dock marina navigate the protected harbor, and folks wander from the rock Hall to the Science center
next door and board the 618-foot steamship William G. Mather.
but if all goes well, this is only the start-apartments, retail,
and office space are proposed for a six-phase development
along the lakefront. "one of the exciting projects for us is the
impact of the development of North coast Harbor," says Sue
Allen, Great Lakes Science center vice president of marketing,
communications, and sales.
The Science center's hands-on learning activities, NASA
Glenn visitor center, and omnimax Theater make exploring
science, technology, engineering, and math as cool as meeting a
pop star. Inside, kids of all ages jam from one thing to the next,
controlling a replica of the mars rover from across the room,
creating a light sculpture in the cleveland creates Zone, or
playing a tune on a colorful Pvc "pipe organ."
That youthful energy harmonizes with attractions such as the
House of blues, Hard rock cafe, beachland ballroom & Tavern,
and new music box Supper club on the west bank of the Flats.
Since opening in 2014, the two-story, two-stage music box with
large windows and a rooftop deck overlooking the river has struck
a chord with groups by featuring a menu from
its rusty Anchor restaurant and either a curated
soundtrack of music or live performances from
local bands and national touring musicians.
but even before cleveland DJ Alan Freed
coined the term "rock and roll" decades ago, this
city has appreciated great music. The worldrenowned cleveland orchestra has played in the
resplendent Severance Hall since 1931. Student
groups can even combine two musical forms with
a classical music rocks package that includes a performance
by the cleveland orchestra, a concert preview, admission to the
rock Hall, and an opportunity to perform on the museum stage.
even University circle-which includes the cleveland botanical
Garden, cleveland museum of Natural History, Western reserve
Historical Society, and cleveland museum of Art-has undergone
a contemporary remix. The cleveland museum of Art completed
an eight-year, $350 million expansion and renovation in 2013. The
rafael viñoly design masterfully blends the original 1916 building
with a 1971 brutalist-style addition, adding two new wings and a
soaring glass atrium that stretches nearly as long as a football field,
creating the effect of making whatever it contains-trees, visitors,
tables, chairs-appear like their own artistic renderings.
Like the city itself, the museum's innovative Gallery one playfully upends expectations with interactive screens where groups
can learn the history of famous art pieces, interpret paintings and
sculpture, and design their own tour from the electronic flow of

images on the 40-foot-long collection Wall. Yet the Western reserve Historical Society may lay claim to cleveland's most beloved
interactive exhibit: the historic euclid beach Park Grand carousel, which opened in 2014. carefully restored to its 1910 glory by
the artisans at carousel Works in mansfield, ohio, and housed in
a striking glass pavilion, the 54 of 58 hand-carved wooden horses
and twinkling band box once again entertain locals for the first
time since the iconic local amusement park closed in 1969.
The $2 million project has drawn more families and stoked
the collective memories of those who enjoyed warm summer
evenings at euclid beach Park. "It's been transformational,"
says Angie Lowrie, director of the Western reserve Historical
Society's cleveland History center.
Such a metamorphosis stands at the center of what the
museum of contemporary Art (mocA) cleveland has done
for the Uptown district, which joins University circle and Little
Italy's restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries. A hexagon at its
base and square at its top, the $27.2 million building seems to
contort like a cirque du Soleil performance of glass and steel.
"A contemporary art museum should not be a monumental
building-static and frozen," explained Farshid moussavi, the
London-based architect who designed it, when mocA's new
building opened in 2012. "It should evoke the idea of change."
Indeed, what was once a tired, rundown stretch of euclid Avenue has become a lively intersection of arts, entertainment, and

"we've Been the underdoG for A
lonG time. i love it when we're
the underdoG And we win."

education. This past August, the 133-year-old cleveland Institute
of Art unveiled its $75 million renovation and expansion that included a home for the cinematheque, a 300-seat art-house movie
theater, and elegant galleries to show faculty and student works.
Directly across from mocA, the Uptown corner Alley treats
bowling like a very cleveland form of contemporary art. rows
of brightly colored bowling balls add to the vibrancy of the twolevel pin hall, and its second-floor space delivers a 10-pin win of
dedicated lanes for groups of all sizes and an arcade.
It's the kind of quirky affection for the city's past that Destination cleveland's Gilbert feels is part of c-Town's strength.
There's an "it" factor building that he compares to trendsetting
cities such as Portland, oregon; Austin, Texas; and Nashville,
Tenn. "our grittiness is becoming cool," Gilbert says. "our offcenteredness is becoming cool."
Steve Gleydura is the editor of cleveland magazine.
