Winds of Change - Fall 2017 - 2

Welcome
AISES
FROM

Welcome to the Fall 2017 edition of Winds of
Change! Our Fall issue is always special because it
coincides with the main event in the AISES
calendar - the National Conference. AISES
members can always find an important reason
to be there, no matter where they are on their
STEM path. But this year's event promises to be
a truly "can't miss" gathering.
As you can tell from the conference motto - 40 Years
Supporting Native People in STEM - the whole AISES family
will be marking this significant "ruby" milestone when we're all together in Denver. Your
wonderful AISES staff has been working hard all year to make the celebration truly
memorable, and it will be great to see our students, our professional members, and our
elders and friends all pausing to reflect on how far we've come.
Of course, the focus is not just on the past - the National Conference is always about
what's next. You can build your future at more than 40 sessions, network with nearly 2,000
other attendees, and visit the largest Career and Opportunities Fair in Indian Country -
not to mention catch up with familiar friends and make a lot of new ones.
A principal goal of every conference - and of our mission year-round - is
fostering the growth of STEM opportunities for
indigenous people and communities. As part of that
effort, we are expanding our focus on tribal and
Native-owned STEM enterprises. Here in Winds of
Change, you'll find our inaugural look at "25 Native
STEM Enterprises to Watch" on page 26.
Speaking of indigenous success in STEM, be sure
to read about our own "Hidden Native Figures." As
in the movie Hidden Figures, we've picked three of
the many - mostly unsung - women who've
pioneered in the sciences, and we're shining a light
on their contributions on page 34.
We're also making sure other notable Native
figures aren't hidden. Read about the winners of
this year's prestigious Professional Awards on page 41. And for more "AISES People"
doing amazing things, turn to page 16. One is Jason Baldes, who has succeeded in
reintroducing bison to the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Baldes plans to
continue working with communities on cultural restoration and is living what his elders
taught him: be strong in who you are and be who you want to be.
Here at AISES we are working every day to support members in getting the training
and experience they need to "be who they want to be." Thank you for being part of this
important mission.

A principal goal of
every conference -
and of our mission
year-round - is
fostering the growth
of STEM opportunities
for indigenous people
and communities.
