M

uskogee Technology has heavenly
goals. That's no surprise since the
high-tech parts made by this highflying company orbit the Earth in the
International Space Station.
Since the Poarch Band of Creek
Indians bought the company in the 1980s, this
Atmore, Ala., enterprise has steadily flown
higher. Back then it was a small operation with
only two or three clients. Today its state-of-theart, 120,000-square-foot facility and 60-plus
employees serve diversified industries
including aerospace, defense, wind energy,
utilities, and oil and gas. The company supplies
precision machined parts, electronics, and
carbon composites to Airbus,
Boeing, Lockheed Martin,
Honda, and a host of other
global corporations.
Westly L. Woodruff, CPP, the
company's new president and
CEO, grew up in southeastern
Alabama. He remembers that
when he graduated from high
school, no local high-tech

manufacturing opportunities existed
for him, the local community, or his
tribe. As a consequence, he had no
choice but to leave his ancestral home
and relocate his young family. Luckily,
he found a great job with a large
international company, even though it was 300
miles from the tribal community.
Then, after 15 years, he believes "divine intervention" struck. "The passing of my beloved
aunt made me start to question my purpose in
life," he recalls. "It made me think about moving
back home to serve my tribe. My grandfather
Lawrence Walker and great-grandfather Fred
Walker were both known as leaders within the
tribal community. Maybe it was
my time and purpose to follow in
their footsteps."
At the same time, James T.
Martin, president and CEO of the
Creek Indian Enterprises
Development Authority (CIEDA),
the economic development arm
of the Poarch Band of Creek
Westly
Indians, offered Woodruff a

position in the tribe's economic development
office. Martin, whom Woodruff describes as a
visionary leader, along with Stephanie Bryan,
the tribe's first female chair, have worked
tirelessly to ensure economic diversity and
financial stability for the next generations of
tribal members and families.
Calling the opportunity "a perfect marriage,"
Woodruff takes his commitment to his
company seriously. He has a bold vision for its
future. "My five-year goal is to be completely
debt free and self-sufficient, as well as expand
our building, expand operations into new
markets, triple our staff, and have three or four
rotating shifts of full-scale production," he says.
"My primary goal is to diversify our customer
base with a balance of aggressive and stable
markets, advance the opportunities for our
team members, and create a steady revenue
