classes. At the time, I didn't
know how powerful the
mural image of that woman
was for me - but after a
workshop at EPSCoR, I
realized that this visual had
truly helped me persist in
science and math.

Tell us about that workshop. After I joined

EPSCoR, we had a training
workshop for faculty who
work with diverse students
where we talked about
everything from micromessages to implicit bias.
One of the key takeaways for
me was that images are
incredibly powerful. In
STEM fields, the way you
create your classroom or
laboratory environment can
send important signals to
students about whether
they belong.

The training session
reminded me of that image
in the trading post. I decided
I wanted to create something
for young students so they
can see themselves in STEM.
I approached AISES, and we
started collaborating. In
2015, we created our first
poster and profile - of Stan
Atcitty of the Navajo tribe,
who's an electrical engineer.
Then we came out with our
second poster and profile
featuring Dr. Otakuye
Conroy-Ben of the Oglala
Lakota tribe, who's a
professor and environmental
engineer. As the idea for
Natives in STEM became a
reality, we built our website
and worked to promote what
we are doing.
