NOTEBOOK

It takes the best of
the best from across the
country and around
the world-people who can
challenge one another's
thinking and approach
problems collectively
from multiple viewpoints.
We are inspired to invent
in an environment of
relentless inquiry and
spirited collaboration.
We are senior scientists,
postdoctoral fellows,
experienced engineers
and new graduates.

❚ AISES CEO Sarah EchoHawk participated in a June panel on minorities in STEM
at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. Panelists discussed the
documentary film Black Women in Medicine following a congressional screening.
EchoHawk spoke about the importance of mentoring and noted that funding for
education in Indian Country has fallen short of what was promised and more
resources are needed to train Native teachers and turn around graduation statistics.
❚ AISES founding member Al Qöyawayma was selected as one of six contemporary
potters whose work was displayed in the "Beauty Speaks for Us" inaugural exhibit
for the new Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Grand Gallery at the Heard Museum
in Phoenix.
❚ Former NASA astronaut Dr. John B. Herrington presented
a program at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame at the GaylordPickens Museum as part of the museum's Summer Thursdays
series. In addition, last fall Herrington traveled to Wisconsin to
visit the College of Menominee Nation and the University of
Wisconsin-Madison to share his story. The two schools
partner in advancing engineering education for indigenous
youth. An educator and author, Herrington focuses on
encouraging Native youth to pursue STEM fields. For more
on Herrington, see "Sacagawea Coin to Recognize Native
Americans in Space" on page 4.

Dr. John B. Herrington
(back row, third from

at the College of
Menominee Nation.

❚ Dr. Evelyn Galban is building a network of support for Native American veterinary
professionals. The mission of the new Native American Veterinary Association (NAVA)
Facebook group includes encouraging indigenous students to pursue veterinary
medicine. Galban is an assistant clinical professor and chief of neurology and neurosurgery at Ryan Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. For more information or to
join NAVA, look for the group on Facebook or email egalban@vet.upenn.edu.

6 WINDS OF CHANGE * FALL 2017

Council of Elders member Dr. Henrietta Mann (above, fifth from left) took part
in a distinguished panel of honorary degree recipients at Smith College in
Northampton, Mass., in May. Chaired by college president Dr. Kathleen McCartney,
the panel also included Clare Higgins, executive director of federally designated
anti-poverty agency Community Action, and Michelle Kwan, the country's most
decorated figure skater and board member of Special Olympics International.
Mann is board chair of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples,
founding president of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal College, and professor
emerita of Native American Studies at Montana State University. During the
discussion, Mann spoke about Native American values and the tenacity of her
ancestors. She also offered some wise advice to the new graduates.
