What does the program
entail? We had an orienta-
tion that featured a panel of
faculty from counseling,
psychology, and clinical
psychology, as well as
students who recently
completed the GRE and
successfully applied to
graduate programs. The
instructors also covered
topics like verbal and
quantitative reasoning. And
there was a day dedicated to
writing and helping prepare
us for the writing section of
the GRE. We also learned
about the application process
for graduate programs in
depth, and what it takes to be
accepted in a very competitive field. It was comprehensive, and I learned so many
things I didn't know before.

Has the program influenced
your thinking about a
career? Whether I pursue a
medical degree or a master's
degree, I definitely want to
stick with health care,
specifically public health.
There are so many disparities
in the care available to rural
populations, especially Indian
Country. I've seen firsthand
aises.org
what it's like when people
don't have access to what they
need to be healthy. There are
diseases and conditions like
obesity and diabetes that can
be prevented if people live
healthier. So that will be my
career focus. Programs like this
one have helped me so much,
because I know that success is
out there for me if I'm willing
to persist and continue to
connect with people who want
me to succeed.

What would you like our
readers to know about
programs like this, and
pursuing higher education?
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
team makes the impossible, possible.
Our work-environment is unparalleled
and promotes a diverse, unified front
that allows us to conquer any challenge.
First, I would definitely
recommend the program to
anybody who wants to further
their education. In fact, I
would encourage students to
pursue any kind of prep
program available to them. It's
a great way to link up with
people who can help, and show
you how to stay on your path. I
would love to see more Native
students pursuing college
degrees, and degrees beyond
that if that's their goal. There
are people and programs to
help if you have the drive and
are willing to work.
