❚ PATHWAY SCHOLARS PROGRAM:
THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA COLLEGE
OF MEDICINE-PHOENIX
Arizona residents who want to pursue a career in medicine may be
candidates for the Pathway Scholars Program (PSP) at the
University of Arizona College of Medicine. Designed for students
who have experienced unique or greater than average challenges on
their path to becoming competitive medical school applicants, the
program focuses on developing the foundational qualities and skills
of outstanding physicians. Students selected for the curriculum
work with a dedicated learning specialist to create a plan customized for their academic needs and strengths. The experience
includes academic support, leadership development, and modified
medical school coursework. Students who complete all of the
program's requirements earn a graduate certificate and have the
opportunity to matriculate into the College of Medicine-Phoenix.
Consideration is given to applicants who are socioeconomically
disadvantaged, first-generation college students, from rural
Arizona, members of a federally recognized tribe, and committed
to working with the state's underserved and diverse populations.

ASK A PARTICIPANT
Former PSP participant
Shandiin Sam is now a
first-year medical student at the
University of Arizona College of
Medicine-Phoenix.
What is your background? I
graduated from Arizona State
University with a BS in
microbiology. Later I became a
medical technologist with the
Indian Health Service (IHS) for
two years in White Earth, Minn.,
and then in Phoenix. My
experience in IHS labs solidified
my decision to go back to school
and pursue medicine.
How did you learn about the
program? I learned about PSP

through a friend who is a
medical student here in

Phoenix. He encouraged me to
apply because he knew it is a
great opportunity to gain more
confidence before starting
medical school by studying
better, attaining more
physician shadowing, and
having support from people in
the program. I'm grateful he
told me about the program, as
I was wavering on whether I
could get into medical school,
especially when I needed to do
better on the MCAT.
What are some highlights of
your experience? The

anticipation of the workload of
a first-year medical student in
the block called molecular basis
of life and disease was thrilling
and frightening at the same
time. People say it's like a fire
hydrant on full blast - where
