MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR NEXT INTERNSHIP

ou've probably heard a lot about how important it is to gain some
practical experience as an intern in a professional setting. In fact,
internships are becoming a serious factor in the job market. About 75
percent of college students are interns at some point, and employers
increasingly recognize how well the skills interns learn on the job
apply to their future full-time employment. If anything, the great
internships are more sought after and competitive than ever, so the
time to get started landing an opportunity for next summer is right
now. In the Summer Opportunities section on page 68, you'll find our
annual list of just some of the many great summer internships out
there. And once you have it, here's how to maximize your internship:

✓ Be reliable. Show up on time and stay late.
✓ Be resourceful. Figure out what needs to be done - then do it.
✓ Be an excellent contributor. Complete your assignments as
directed, do a great job, then ask for more work.
✓ Ask good questions. You are there to learn, but before you ask,
research your questions and possible answers.
✓ Ask for feedback. Find out what you are doing well and what you
could do better.
✓ Network. Use your insider advantage to request brief informational
interviews from staff members, then build your professional
relationships and connect on LinkedIn.
