education, Babson College in Wellesley,
Mass., has announced its inaugural Women in
Technology Student Fellows. The undergraduate and graduate fellows will work with faculty
and industry partners to create new initiatives
for women in technology at Babson, with the
goal of shrinking the gender gap in the technology industry.

Science and engineering students at Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore are now
offered an improvisation elective to improve
their communication skills. The improv class
focuses on listening skills as well as the ability
to add to what someone else is saying and

UNIVERSITY OF MARY WASHINGTON
A National Science Foundation grant of nearly
$1 million has been given to the University of
Mary Washington to support academically talented and diverse low-income students in STEM
majors. The new Jepson Scholars Program
at the Fredericksburg, Va., school will begin
recruiting students next fall.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY
DataScience@Syracuse, a new online graduate
program in applied data science, has been
launched at Syracuse University. It will offer
an 18-month master's program that was developed in collaboration with the university's
Martin J. Whitman School of Management and
its "iSchool" - School of Information Studies
(originally the School of Library Science).
Taught by Syracuse faculty members, the new
interdisciplinary program is designed for data
science professionals.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT
PEMBROKE
A focus on the campus environment has garnered Tree Campus USA recognition for UNC
Pembroke. An Arbor Day Foundation program,
Tree Campus honors schools that promote
healthy trees and a spirit of conservation among
members of the student body. Winning schools
must meet five criteria, including a campus tree
care plan and student service learning projects.
This is the second consecutive year that UNC
Pembroke has earned this distinction.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Rolls-Royce and Purdue University in West
Lafayette, Ind., are launching a $24 million
aerospace research and development partnership. The funds will be used to create
a laboratory for turbine airfoil technology
research. The new laboratory will be located
at the school's Zucrow Labs, one of the
largest facilities for propulsion research at
a university in the country. Rolls-Royce has
a significant presence in Indiana, employing
about 4,000 people.
