engineering degree. I did some environmental
work as well as health and safety work, then
started doing more of what I was really
interested in: vertical construction. After about
a year and a half, my wife and I relocated to
San Francisco, where she had been accepted to
law school, and for three years I worked for a
construction firm there. Then in mid-2016
- after working on some amazing projects,
including the Museum of Modern Art and the
Apple campus - everything came full circle. I
took a job with BBNC and we moved back to
Alaska. I spend about 75 percent of my time

processes that are streamlined. It's not that
complicated, and the right opportunity can
literally change your life.

❚ NATIONAL RESEARCH
MENTORING NETWORK
Through the National Research Mentoring
Network (NRMN), undergraduate and
graduate students from underrepresented
populations can connect with experienced
mentors in biomedical, behavioral,
clinical, and social sciences. NRMN's
research-focused mentoring opportunities
are based on the premise that quality
mentoring and networking experiences
can measurably enhance the training,
career development, and success of
individuals from diverse backgrounds,
communities, and cultures.

Funded by the National Institutes of
Health (NIH), NRMN is headquartered at
Boston College and has offices at the
University of North Texas, the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, the University of
Minnesota, and Morehouse School of
Medicine. Students nationwide can log in at
nrmnet.net to create a profile as part of the
Guided Virtual Mentorships program. Then
NRMN uses an algorithm - assessing
factors such as field of study, special
academic interests, and cultural background
- to provide students with a list of
prospective mentors who could be a good
match. After a mentee selects a mentor, the
two engage in a series of sessions over four »
