emphasizing the importance of
an interdisciplinary approach to
business. Outside the classroom, I
played Division I lacrosse,
mentored students in the local
community, and balanced two
on-campus jobs. I truly enjoyed
my college experience, but tuition
was far beyond my means. The
AT&T ICAE Scholarship Program
played a vital role in allowing me
to complete my degree, and I am
appreciative for its support.
How did you learn about this
opportunity? The AT&T ICAE

Scholarship Program offers a
variety of scholarship grants for
the pursuit of higher education. I
first learned of the program while
searching for scholarships during
my first year of college. While the
scholarship program is rooted in
tuition assistance, I hope to act as
an alumni ambassador for the
ICAE team and spread the success
of the program.
What did you find valuable
about this program? Margo

Bernath and the people behind
the ICAE Scholarship Program
are without a doubt the
program's greatest assets. Margo
genuinely cares about the success
of scholarship recipients, and she
went above and beyond to ensure
that I successfully received my
funding. I was able to link up
with the ICAE team for the first
time during the 2016 AISES
National Conference, and they
were more than welcoming.
Can you attribute any career
progress to the support you
received from ICAE? Although

I began working at the Department of Defense just over a year
ago, I have been able to re-create
strategies and procedures that
directly impact my agency's
functioning. Furthermore, I have
been able to travel the country
and share my story, ultimately
promoting and providing career
opportunities to prospective
applicants. Very importantly to
me, my position allowed me to
attend the 2016 AISES National
Conference in a different light
- this time providing the
opportunities to those searching
for career opportunities.

❚ VIRGINIAMARYLAND
COLLEGE OF
VETERINARY
MEDICINE
A career in veterinary medicine
holds more possibilities than you
might think. That's what the
people at Virginia-Maryland
College of Veterinary Medicine
(VA-MD Vet Med) want you to
know. Sure, it could mean
working with family pets. But it
also can mean serving in animal
shelters, protecting the biosecurity
of our country, practicing zoo and
wildlife medicine, or government
service. VA-MD Vet Med is the
only veterinary school in North
America with a program allowing
students to pursue a specific
"track" from a range of options,
like equine, mixed species, small
animal, and public/corporate.
With a strong commitment to
inclusion of students from
underrepresented populations,
VA-MD Vet Med granted more
than $1.2 million in scholarships
to doctor of veterinary medicine
(DVM) students in 2016. At the
school's campus in Blacksburg,
Va., students receive rigorous,
hands-on veterinary education in
core subjects to prepare for
entry-level clinical practice, as well
as in-depth training. Ninety-eight
percent of the class of 2016 passed
the North American Veterinary
Licensing Examination, exceeding
the national pass rate.
ASK A PARTICIPANT
Before enrolling at VA-MD Vet
Med, Will Culver earned a BS
degree in wildlife from Humboldt State University in Arcata,
Calif. In 2014, he was an AISES
award recipient for his presentation of summer research
completed for the Native
American and Pacific Islander
Research Experience. We asked
Culver, now in his second year at
VA-MD Vet Med and on track to
graduate in 2019 with DVM and
master's of public health degrees,
about his experience.
How did you first become
interested in veterinary
medicine? I've always loved
