Summit Opens
Doors
Networking opportunities and skill-building
workshops are a dependable draw for both
college students and professional members at
the annual Leadership Summit. The goal of this
event is to provide career and professional
development opportunities to better prepare
attendees to land jobs and succeed in their
chosen careers. A highlight of the summit is a
training program and formal mentorship match,
pairing professional members with students.

NAIVSEF
Sparks Creativity

This April, pre-college members in
grades five through 12 are
presenting their projects in the
fourth annual National
American Indian Virtual
Science and Engineering Fair
(NAIVSEF). Because this
Society for Science and the
Public-affiliated fair is
held virtually, it does not
require travel. Instead,
entrants demonstrate
their research online in the form of slide
shows and videos and present their projects
via teleconferencing. NAIVSEF welcomes
entrants in two categories: Junior Division,
grades five to eight, and Senior Division,
grades nine to 12. AISES awards cash prizes to
each division's winners, and pays travel
expenses and registration fees for Senior
Division Grand Award winners and their
sponsors to compete at the Intel International
Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles.

Dr. John B. Herrington
shares his passion for
space in a recently
published children's book.

Former NASA astronaut Dr. John B. Herrington has published his first children's
book, Mission to Space. After retiring from NASA, with three space walks to his
credit, Herrington earned a doctorate in education with a goal of
fostering STEM education, especially among Native youth. He is
a current member of the AISES Board of Directors.
Michael Laverdure participated on a panel hosted by the Stillwater

Native American Parent Advisory Committee, an organization
sponsored by the Stillwater, Minn., public schools. The discussion
was part of the organization's educational series, highlighting the
careers of successful Native Americans. Laverdure, an architect
with DSGW and director of First American Design Studio, is a
member of the AISES Board of Directors and also serves on the
board of the Minnesota American Indian Chamber of Commerce.

EARTH DAY MARCH FOR SCIENCE
AISES is among the many organizations endorsing the
March for Science, to be held April 22, Earth Day, in
Washington, D.C., with satellite marches worldwide. The
diverse and nonpartisan group, representing a wide range
of disciplines, will advocate for evidence-based policies and
urge lawmakers to fund scientific research. Follow-up to the
march will include a series of outreach programs and events.
