It's no mystery that tech companies like Apple and
Facebook have flourished in large part because of their
ability to develop extremely sophisticated and
complicated products. But ultimately, how endless lines
of code and complex software applications and
algorithms are presented to consumers will determine
whether or not a company's creations are a success in
the marketplace. Making sure that the end users of
software and technology products can navigate their
way easily and enjoyably is the task of a UX (short for
user experience) designer. Because UX designers stand
in the middle ground between tech companies and the
millions - or billions - of people who hopefully can
benefit from their products, this is a profession that
requires equal parts tech savvy and human empathy.
Indeed, a deep grasp of software and coding and other
tech skills is vital. But so too is a strong sense of what
makes a website or app usable for regular people.
Given the ever-growing importance of technology in
our lives, it's no surprise that the demand for UX
designers is large and growing.

The job website Glassdoor recently unveiled a report listing the top 50 jobs in America. For the second year
in a row, the top spot - determined by the number of job openings, job satisfaction, and median annual
base salary - was claimed by data scientist. (Second in Glassdoor's ranking was DevOps engineer - see
later in this article for more on that.) Two basic reasons explain why data scientist is a top-ranked job: every
company needs them, and there aren't enough to go around. Why do companies big and small need the
help of talented data scientists? Because the ability to make sense out of the raw data companies pull from
social media, e-commerce websites, and other sources is increasingly the difference between great profits
and bankruptcy, regardless of whether a company is a retailer or a manufacturer. The sophisticated
collection and analysis of so-called "big data" require not only skills in statistics and analytics but also the
ability to communicate the results in ways that executives can understand and act on. It's a rare combination, but it's one that is rewarded with a median base salary of $110,000 and plenty of job opportunities.
