ENGINEERING
➽ DEVOPS ENGINEER

➽ RESEARCH ENGINEER

In the notoriously talent-starved tech industry, one job has proven to
be the most difficult to fill. A recent survey by the job site Indeed.com
found that DevOps engineers - a mash-up of software development
and information technology operations - topped the list of the most
difficult tech positions for companies to staff, ahead of software
engineers, developers, and database engineers. It's not because the
jobs aren't attractive: Indeed.com pegs the average salary for those
with DevOps skills at $123,000. Rather, it's a challenging and
incredibly important role for companies interested in increasingly
automating their operations and speeding software updates and
deployments (which is basically all companies). DevOps engineers
work in the middle ground between software developers who create
new programs and the IT professionals who have to implement,
update, and troubleshoot them. This typically requires education in
computer science, but the skills needed include a strong knowledge of
code and programming languages as well as the IT infrastructure on
which they operate. Though tech skills are paramount, there's also the
challenge of working to bridge differences and fix problems between
contingents of very smart (and often opinionated) tech professionals.
No wonder it's an in-demand job.

If Thomas Edison were applying for a job
today, he'd likely search for a position as a
research engineer. At the most basic level,
research engineers are inventors who are
able to harness their technical knowledge
and insights to create something new -
be it a novel product or service, an
improved technique or process, or an
innovative technology. Though the baseline
requirement for a job as a research
engineer is typically an engineering degree
- often a master's or PhD - research and
development (R&D) skills can be applied
to a wide universe of applications, from
industrial design to product development to
work in electrical engineering and aerospace.
Given the breakneck pace of innovation in
so many fields, it's hardly a surprise that
research engineers are in tremendous
demand and well compensated: a recent
search of the career website Glassdoor
revealed over 100,000 research engineer
job openings at universities, health care
companies, research institutions, and tech
giants like Apple.
