UNIVERSITY OF
NORTH CAROLINA
AT PEMBROKE
A $425,000 endowment
scholarship to benefit Native
American students has been
established at UNC Pembroke
by Dr. Leonard Holmes, a longserving chemistry professor
at the school. His goal is to
fund the education of future
medical professionals who
will go on to practice in the
local area. The scholarship is
named in honor of Holmes'
son Hickory. The new Leonard
and Hickory Holmes Medical
Career Endowed Scholarship at
UNC Pembroke will fund four
scholarships per academic
year for American Indian
students studying chemistry,
physics, or nursing. In addition
to teaching, Dr. Holmes directs
the Biotechnology Research
and Training Center at the

WORCESTER
POLYTECHNIC
INSTITUTE
One of the country's first
technology and engineering
schools, Worcester Polytechnic
Institute (WPI) in Worcester,
Mass., will benefit from a
$750,000 Phase II National
Science Foundation (NSF)
grant. The funds will go toward
development of a wound treatment with anti-infection and
anti-inflammatory properties
in partnership with Histogen,
a regenerative medicine company. The research is based on
an antimicrobial peptide from

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I
The NSF has awarded a $1.4
million grant to the University
of Hawai'i to help minority
students, especially Native
Hawai'ians, pursue STEM studies. Some of the funds will be
directed to helping students
make the transition from the
university system's seven community colleges to a four-year

UNIVERSITY OF
CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO
The largest single gift from
an alumnus in the history of
UC San Diego has come from
Taner Halicioglu. The first fulltime employee at Facebook, he
was instrumental in developing
the hardware infrastructure
that powered the growth of the
social media giant. His
$75 million donation, meant
to help make the campus a
national leader in data science,
follows a 2015 donation of
$2 million to the computer

PACE UNIVERSITY
This fall the College of Health
Professions at Pace University
in New York will launch a PhD
program in nursing. The focus
will be on reducing social
disparities in health, integrating health into other sectors,
and organizing health services

UNIVERSITY OF
INDIANAPOLIS
The Robert B. Annis Foundation has donated $5 million
to launch a new school of
engineering at the University of
Indianapolis. The first classes
are expected to begin in the
fall. Annis, an Indiana native,
was an inventor, engineer, and
entrepreneur who focused on
magnetics and demagnetizing

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY
The Climate Action Plan at
Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y., has announced a
second round of funding to promote reduction of greenhouse
gases. Faculty and students
may apply to fund projects
that raise awareness of climate
disruption and promote environmental sustainability. The
funding, administered through
the Campus as Laboratory
for Sustainability program,
is designed to advance both
scholarship and a greener
