XW Labs, a Chinese biopharmaceutical research and development
company focused on neurological
disorders, has finalized a licensing
agreement with the University of
Pittsburgh on researching mitochondria. The goal is to develop
new therapies that enlist mitochondria, which are central to many

Encouraging the study of "smart
systems" is the goal of a new NSF
grant under its REU (Research
Experiences for Undergraduates)
program. Florida Atlantic University
in Boca Raton will use the funds to
benefit students in its Institute for
Sensing and Embedded Network
Systems Engineering. The term
"smart systems" describes an
emerging class of systems that
span hardware and software layers.

CORNELL UNIVERSITY
The country's first commercialscale high-pressure food processor
has been installed at Cornell University. The school's New York State
Agricultural Experiment Station in
Geneva, N.Y., will use the processor
to retain food quality while inactivating pathogens. The processor is
part of the Institute for Food Safety
at Cornell, where scientists are
working on ways to safeguard freshness while destroying dangerous
microorganisms in the food supply.
