FROM

Welcome to the Summer 2017 issue of Winds of
Change! This is a special edition for us because it
marks the first issue of our magazine to be
published exclusively by AISES Publishing Inc.
It's an exciting - and fitting - step for AISES as
we mark our 40th anniversary. Previously, since
the inception of the magazine in 1986, we had
worked closely with full-service publishing companies to
produce our member publication. Now we have taken it
in-house, working with the same creative team that has brought
you Winds of Change since 2010 to ensure continuity and deliver the magazine you've
come to expect from AISES. And, as always, we welcome your feedback.
Plans for celebrating our 40th anniversary milestone at this year's National Conference
are coming together. Our wonderful staff is working hard to make sure this year's
gathering of the AISES family will be as memorable as it is productive. Plan now to be
part of it all in Denver, Sept. 21-23. You won't want to miss the many networking
opportunities, social celebrations, and informative sessions - or the biggest College,
Career, and Opportunities Fair in Indian Country. Join us and be part of the AISES
mission in action in this milestone year.
An important part of that mission, of course, is
helping our members advance on their personal
STEM paths. On page 20 in this issue you'll find a
rundown of 10 STEM fields where career opportunities are expected to show significant growth,
along with a sampling of current job openings and
academic programs that offer training in relevant
skills. On page 26 we take a look at some of the
exciting programs in STEM education that are
making SIPI a role model for other tribal colleges.
And as we bring you in every issue, there's news of
members and chapters in AISES Notebook on
page 6, profiles of members in AISES People on
page 10, and ideas for opportunities in education
and careers in Career Builder on page 30 and Paths in Education on page 34.
Whether it's in the pages of Winds of Change, at the National Conference, or at
meetings of your chapter, you can witness the AISES mission in action - a dedicated
community working for something we all believe in. As Cherise John, an engineer with
GE Aviation, puts it, "I was always involved with AISES. This community has opened
doors for me to meet new people who share a common goal."
As we approach our next 40 years, I look forward to working with all of you toward
that common goal.

Our wonderful staff is
working hard to make
sure this year's gathering
of the AISES family will
be as memorable as it is
productive. Plan now
to be part of it all in
Denver, Sept. 21-23.
