A Council of Elders Member Reflects on
the 40th Anniversary of AISES

A

ISES is 40! Turning 40 is fabulous.
Having twice turned 40, I value the
opportunity to reflect on the AISES
mission and trajectory, which are significant
and something that I am privileged to
witness. The organization has waxed and
waned like the moon over the years, and it
has affirmed its role, place, purpose, and
brilliance in serving its members. AISES has
illuminated the path for indigenous students
and professionals who pursue science,
technology, engineering, and math
(STEM) disciplines while maintaining its core values of knowledge,
innovation, relationships, commitment, empowerment, and culture.
40 WINDS OF CHANGE * SUMMER 2017

The Council of Elders has been part of
AISES for a long time, and several of our
esteemed colleagues now watch over AISES
from celestial perspectives. And although they
are not with us today, their influence
continues to encourage us to maintain a spirit
of open inquiry, creativity, service, and
purpose. Horace Axtell, Lee Piper, Phil Lane
Sr., Bow Lane, Franklin Kahn, Eddie
Box Sr., and others in the AISES family
have left their indelible presence and
love with us, and we are grateful.
AISES is solid across the multitude
of activities that the Board of
Directors, advisory councils, student
representatives, Winds of Change, and

the talented staff are charged with achieving.
From National Conferences to the March for
Science, scholarships to internships, volunteers to corporate partnerships, Sequoyah
Fellowships to memberships, and staffing to
strategic planning, AISES is the best catalyst
for sharing information and working together
on STEM issues for North American
indigenous students and professionals.
AISES continues to provide multiple
opportunities to build STEM capacity for
American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native
Hawai'ians, First Nations, Pacific Islanders,
and others. The challenge of meeting the
needs, realities, and expectations of tribal
communities is best understood and
advocated for and by our people. It means
planting and cultivating the talent and
diversity of indigenous students and leaders
in STEM - an arena where AISES is
practiced and excels magnificently.
Promise is in every thread of the work of
AISES. We feel it in the presence of our AISES
family. We hear it in messages from mentors
whose meaningful contributions are genuine.
We enjoy the scent of sacred plants for peace
and reflection when we gather together. We
see our hope in the STEM students who are
championing indigenous language, culture,
and science in their data and research.
Together we savor the successes that empower
people to dream big and live their best lives
through education.
What is ahead in the next 40 years?
Traditional knowledge and science are the
AISES foundation, while compassion, truth,
understanding, and love equally anchor our
teachings. Serious and pressing issues are
threatening our communities with the
leveling of a pen. Others before us experienced similar circumstances, yet we have the
same grit and determination to take charge
of our own agendas by relying on our
cultural competencies and wise teachings
from those who walked ahead. Our
intellectual and traditional knowledge are
strong. Our spiritual identity is sustaining.
