Accolades, Achievements,
and Milestones
❚ Council of Elders member Dr.
Henrietta Mann was recognized
with an honorary degree at the
2017 graduation ceremonies of
Smith College in Northampton,
Mass., for her contributions to
Native American education and
tribal leadership. Mann, who was the
recipient of the 2012 Ely S. Parker
Award, the highest AISES honor, is
professor emerita of Native American
Studies at Montana State University and
the founding president of the Cheyenne
and Arapaho Tribal College. For more on

❚ Steven Crossley,
assistant professor at
the University
of Oklahoma
Gallogly College
of Engineering and
faculty AISES
Steven
mentor, has
Crossley
received a coveted
National Science
Foundation Early Career Award.
The grant will fund research focused on
understanding catalysts, and his work will
be integrated with educational and
outreach programs for Native students.

❚ AISES CEO Sarah EchoHawk will be
honored by the National Action Council
for Minorities in Engineering with the
organization's 2017 Diversity Vision
Award. The award goes to individuals who
set a personal example and inspire
minority youth to achieve academically
and professionally. The award will be
presented in October.

❚ Denise Thomas, coordinator of Title
VII AISES for the Madison Metropolitan
School District in Wisconsin, is one of six
women named by the University of
Wisconsin-Madison as an Outstanding
Woman of Color. The award recognizes
exceptional service in education, social
justice, research, and community
building.

nationally acclaimed
potter Al Qöyawayma won
Best of Pottery and a
Judge's Choice Award at
the 2017 Heard Museum
Guild Indian Fair & Market.
