FROM

Welcome to the 2017-2018 edition of the Winds of
Change Special College Issue! It's our 24th year of
bringing our pre-college and undergraduate
students information they can put to good use as
they plan their future academic paths.
At AISES, there's really no more important
item on our organizational to-do list than "create
a better future for indigenous people." This issue - and your personal
future - is part of that mission. After all, when you choose a school
where you can be challenged and inspired, where you can find a campus
home, and where you can chart a smooth path to completing your degree, then we all succeed.
As you research schools for your important next step, be sure to spend some time with the
"Top 200 Colleges for Native Americans" listings starting on page 23. And to make the most of
all the research we've gathered here, it's a good idea to begin by checking out "How to Read
the Tables" on page 24.
The tables include financial information, and that's important. You should factor in the
cost of each school you are considering, because how much you ultimately pay for your degree
will also affect your future. If you are like most students, coming up with the tuition payments
will involve some borrowing. To help you think about those consequential student loan
decisions, we've included a feature article on "Controlling Student Debt" on page 14.
Also in the Top 200 tables is information about the Native
community on campus and the various support programs

For me, an especially inspiring part of this issue is the
a better future for
personal stories of students and recent grads in "The Student
indigenous people." Body," starting on page 4. You'll read about their challenges and
their successes, along with their hopes for the future, and it's
heartening to see how many of their plans include contributing to their communities.
One recent graduate who is already doing that is Brandon Begay, whose story is on page 6.
Brandon says that he was inspired by teachers in high school and college not only to stick with
math and science, but also to become an inspiring teacher himself. He is now working with
Teach for America back at his own alma mater, Shiprock High School. Brandon says, "I want to
empower students in my community with education and knowledge as well as be a role model
and mentor for them." He's clearly succeeding, and a new generation is benefiting.
Whatever your path may be, we at AISES are invested in your success as well. We are proud
of what you have accomplished so far, and we hope this issue of Winds of Change - and all
your AISES connections - will be a resource you count on.
