While sailing on the beautiful San Diego Bay in an adapted boat, Ellen Kaatz pilots the craft by listening to the instructor and doing what he tells her. Because she had total control, she had a sense of freedom.

Asked if she was scared to participate in the events, her response was quick as she typed out, “No, I love adventure.” The only trepidation was with surfing. “I was afraid of inhaling water, and the rough ocean,” she explained. “I swim at home with a bunch of floaties in a calm, heated pool. I did get a mouthful of water, but there were people within arms’ reach every second, and the ‘hotties’ never let go of me.” (The “hotties” were young U.S. Marines helping at the surfing venue.) When asked if she would try surfing again, Kaatz could not contain a mischievous grin, typing, “Yes—and the eight marines waiting to catch me in the surf!” She added, “It was worth the risk. That’s what I’ll tell my ALS doc after she recovers from the shock that I surfed!” Kaatz’s favorite event was sailing, mainly because it gave her such a sense
