Horace Mann Magazine - Fall 2009 - (Page 5)

Director of Development letter from the director of development O ne of the most indelible aspects of a Horace Mann School education is how we, as students, learned to make connections—between art and history, music and math, advances in science and the state of society. We learned to link literature with life lessons, and we studied a foreign language to prepare for future forays into the world at large. We also enjoyed developing connections with a favorite teacher or advisor, to say nothing of connecting, at Horace Mann, with lifelong friends. Horace Mann School is acutely aware of the importance of being connected. During the past school year all HM alumni, students, faculty, and current parents received the School’s on-line newsletter “Across the Divisions.” Our extended community also gained access to photographs depicting both special events and everyday doings at HM through Picasa. An HM Twitter feed circulated important announcements, as well as brief news items on interesting moments at School. Our increasing presence on YouTube enables members of our community to experience such events as a concert or commencement as if in the audience. The Alumni House and Development Office also pursued ways to enhance our connections with all of our alumni. Receiving “Across the Divisions” you learned what was going on in each Division of Horace Mann. Many alums joined a Horace Mann Facebook group, which has gotten word out about such events as the HM Alumni Council’s Winter Party, and the annual Spring Benefit/Casino Night through which alumni raise money for the HM Student Assistance Fund. The Facebook connection brought new participants to each event. With the publication of this issue of Horace Mann Magazine we are pleased to introduce yet another way of keeping you connected. We have partnered with Nxtbook to place the magazine online. Readers can choose to peruse these pages in hand or in a virtual magazine format. From your computer, iPhone, or Blackberry, you can flip through the pages at home or on the go, through an easy to navigate, online format. Nxtbook provides a reading experience similar to that of a print magazine in an eco-friendly, paperless format. It also enables readers to forward articles. Access to the online edition is available through emailed links, and through links displayed on Horace Mann’s website, its Facebook page, and Twitter feed. We look forward to an exciting future through our relationship with Nxtbook. Soon, we will be able to present to you video of that Book Day you read about, or the speech given by each year’s Distinguished Alumnus, or even provide a front row seat to commencement. In the meantime, we recommend you reference this issue of Horace Mann Magazine to check out the websites and Youtube videos of many of the alumni written about here. For, in this issue, we focus on humor—something we can all welcome into our lives right about now. Alumni from Horace Mann School have contributed greatly to the world of humor since this School’s earliest days. Their wit has connected generations through laughter. We celebrate this contribution as we start a new school year… and enter laughing. We look forward to seeing you at Homecoming on Saturday, October 24, 2009. It’s a great day to renew your connection to Horace Mann! Melissa Murphy Parento ’90 Director of Development Horace Mann Magazine Fall 2009 5
