Wilson ’33 Surgeon, is remembered A memorial written by John McCormack, life-long friend: Edwin F. Wilson ’33 died of pneumonia in New Jersey on September 6, 2008. Ed and I grew up together (1929-38) in the first apartment house built on Cayuga Avenue, 4414. Ed’s family moved into the almost-finished building just before Thanksgiving in 1929. We followed a few weeks later. Ed’s dad, Edwin, was the principal of the public school on City Island. His mother, Emily, taught in a Bronx public school. The family spent summers in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. This instilled a love of Maine in Ed. Years later he built a house on a lake in Greenville, ME. After he retired he spent much time there. Ed went to Columbia (Class of 1937) and then to the University of Maryland’s dental school. He decided after a year to switch to its medical school from which he graduated. After graduating he was commissioned in the Army Air Corps and served in Europe for much of World War II. He returned to civilian life as a Major. Ed initially practiced in New York City. He was a surgeon. He was on call for events at Madison Square Garden. He admired hockey players. When stitching was needed most participants hesitated. Not hockey players. They would tell him, “Sew me up quick, Doc. I gotta get back on the ice.” In the early 1950s he moved his practice to Riverhead, NY, and served as his hospital’s chief surgeon for many years. I would guess he retired circa 1983. His wife, Marge, predeceased him. I know he had two sons… I moved to Dallas in 1953 and saw Ed, on average, maybe every ten years. I last saw him at his camp in Maine in August, 2002. He was retired. She worked for 10 years on the staff of the Dutchess County Mental Health Clinic, in Beacon, N.Y. A tireless volunteer, she helped establish Dutchess County Community College.
