patricia zuroski heads new office of diversity Director of Diversity Patricia Zuroski met with Associate Director of Diversity Markell Parker and Assistant Director of Diversity Ian Rios ’99 before the start of the school year to discuss possible programs to address diversity within Horace Mann School. Patricia Zuroski Heads New Office of Diversity as Diversity Initiatives Expand Within Horace Mann School “Horace Mann School prepares a diverse community of students to lead great and giving lives.” ith these words Horace Mann School introduces the Mission Statement that succinctly defines the School’s purpose. After working with the School community and its Curriculum Council to carefully re-craft that Mission Statement in recent years, Head of School Dr. Tom Kelly also sees these words as an imperative to celebrate the nature of diversity within the School’s community, and to understand the role it plays in fostering students’ current and future “great and giving lives.” For Horace Mann School, a community that has 31.7% of the student body identified as students of color and 18.3% of the faculty and staff identified as people of color, demographics tell only part of the story. With this in mind, and with a commitment to value diversity in admissions and hiring, new initiatives will focus on affirming identity, building community and how “the Life of the Mind” is brought to life as students and faculty engage with ideas from diverse perspectives. Diversity at Horace Mann School W is also about how such perspectives bring richness and depth to its educational legacy. Spearheading much of this discussion is the Office of Diversity, In its 13th year of existence at Horace Mann School the Office has a new direction, focused on perspectives, practices and pedagogy. Launched by Dr. Kelly, this path is aimed at recognizing and appreciating diversity as an integral part of every aspect of life at Horace Mann, from curriculum to community engagement, from admissions to administration. WHY DIVERSITY? “We are actively seeking a diverse student body and a diverse faculty, staff and administration at this School,” said Dr. Kelly. “Why? Because diversity enriches us, who we are, what we teach and what our students learn.
