Dr. Ashton speaks openly and non-judgmentally to her teen patients. She now shares this advice in a no-holds-barred guidebook, based on her passion to arm girls with the knowledge they need to make smart choices about everything from birth control, to eating disorders, grooming, and more. Writing in a fresh, girl-to-girl voice, Dr. Ashton has created an up-to-date health book that speaks directly to young women. world. Spanning 3,000 years, from the biblical narrative of Abraham’s purchase of a burial cave for Sarah to the violent present, Hebron Jews offers a controversial analysis of a community located at the crossroads of the Israeli-Palestinian struggle over national boundaries, and the internal Israeli struggle over the meaning of Jewish statehood. Wrote Seth Lipsky in Tablet Magazine, Auerbach tells the story of Hebron’s Jews (including the 1929 massacre) “in gruesome detail” and “uses the skills of a long-tenured professor to remind us not only of the importance of the Hebron story… but also of its ironies.” new chapter on torture. He also argues for the seriousness of the concept of military honor, but limits honorable military activity by a strict interpretation of “war crime.” An emeritus professor at Temple University, Axinn’s philosophical study explores the line between honorable and dishonorable military action, and cautions that in compliance with the war conventions, professional military personnel and knowledgeable civilians must not lose their moral nerve. Michael Walzer of the Institute for Advanced Study called A Moral Military “a virtuoso display of intellectual energy and moral courage.” sex changes: transformations in society and Psychoanalysis By Mark J. Are there restrictions on how we fight a war? What is meant by “military honor” and does it really affect the contemporary soldier? Is human dignity possible under battlefield conditions? Professor Sidney Axinn ’40 considered these ethical questions within the context of the laws of warfare when his landmark book A Moral Military was first published in 1989. He answered “yes” to each question in his original study of the conduct of war, which also analyzed the “Laws of Warfare” as found in the Hague and Geneva (international military) Conventions from a philosophical viewpoint. In this revised and expanded edition of his classic book, which was once studied at West Point, Prof. Axinn includes a In Sex Changes: Transformations in Society and Psychoanalysis Dr. Mark Blechner ’68 explores societal attitudes toward sexuality over the last half-century, noting that: “In the 1950s, gay people in the United States were routinely arrested; today, homosexual activity between consenting adults is legal in every state. In the 1950s, ambitious women were often seen as psychopathological; today, a woman has campaigned for U.S. President.” Writes Dr. Blechner: “I have lived through these startling changes in society. This book collects papers I have written over the last 45 years on sex, gender, and sexuality. Interspersed are reflections on the changes that have occurred during that time period in society and in my life. I show how changes in society, changes in my life, and changes in my writing on sexuality, as well as in psychoanalysis in general, each affected one another. One hundred years ago, psychoanalysis was at the cutting edge of new ideas about sex and gender, but in the latter half of the 20th Century, psychoanalysts were often seen as reactionary upholders of society’s prejudices….
