philanthropy and you ustaining our environment is an ideal that Horace Mann School has embraced wholeheartedly, along with core considerations students and their teachers pursue toward the greater communal good. The common denominator shared by such initiatives at Horace Mann School, from communal service to environmental awareness, is the education that accompanies each. No “cause” is adopted without thoughtful examination of the surrounding issues, whether by a Nursery student learning respect for living creatures, or an Upper Division AP Environmental Science student learning the pluses and minuses of different types of energy sources. Providing the kind of enriched education that leads HM’s students to lives of contribution and fulfillment requires resources to sustain the “sustainers”—those young people learning about their responsibility toward sustaining the world. That sustenance comes from the greater Horace Mann School community of alumni, parents and friends of which our current students and teachers are a part. The wide-reaching Horace Mann community had a chance to meet some of these people as individuals in a video produced by the Horace Mann School Alumni House and Development Office in December 2009. Entitled “We Are Horace Mann” each participant introduced themselves according to Sustaining Those Learning to Sustain, Who “Are Horace Mann” S their interests or activities at school, the subjects they teach, or the work they perform at Horace Mann. To see the faces and hear the voices of some of the 1,784 students and 357 employees who, indeed, “Are Horace Mann” provided a delightful window into the lively personalities who populate this School. Seeing their winning smiles and hearing these Horace Mann School “citizens” state their serious commitment to their pursuits also served to bring the entire HM community closer together, and inspired attention to Annual Fund giving that makes possible the education of those HM so clearly engages. That support is greatly appreciated. From a self-proclaimed Kindergarten-aged “butterfly scientist,” to an Upper Division teacher “of difficult poetry,” to “a protector,” “a good listener,” a “physics nut” and “a friend” the faces of Horace Mann tell the powerful tale of the legacy that sustains this School, and that it is all of our responsibility to sustain.
