H orace Mann School students, teachers and alumni continually make their mark within the school community, and in the wider world in areas ranging from the arts to athletics, from science to serving the wider community. Throughout the 2010–2011 school year students have distinguished themselves in national and international science competitions, in helping raise over $23,000 to fight cancer in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer tournament, and in creating magnificent sculpture, paintings, music and theater performances in every Division of the school. Alumni have been hailed for their professional distinctions, and even their heroism. To be more specific: HM junior Kathryn Bartel ’12 was one of 35 high school women from among 2,800 candidates across the country to be honored by the National Center for Women and Information Technology in its Computing Award program; the Horace Mann’s girls varsity gymnastics team won its 11th straight and 13th overall AAIS 34 Horace Mann Magazine Spring 2011 Championship; HM’s varsity wrestlers won the Ivy League and NY Independent School League championships; the Varsity Fencing Team captured gold in the Independent School Fencing League. Seventh graders James Hayman ’16, Hugh and James Savoldelli ’16, and Jeffrey Weiner ’16 were national first place winners in the Toshiba and National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) competition. History teacher Dominique Paduano published a fascinating study on using images to teach gender and ethnic diversity in The History Teacher; and Horace Mann School dancers were selected to perform during the half-time show at the Orange Bowl. Among alumni, David Leonhardt ’90 was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his economic writing in The New York Times. And Rafael Castellanos ’09 was cited for service during NYC’s December 2010 blizzard.
