The Horace Mann School community has been observing this milestone throughout the 2011-2012 school year, and will continue to commemorate this occasion in the coming year. Several teachers, departments and Divisions within Horace Mann School have recognized this anniversary as an opportunity to connect current Horace Mann School students with alumni and with the history of their school through visits and inventive projects. The entire Horace Mann School community of faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, parents and friends participated in these activities, and joined together on campus on May 19, 2012 to acknowledge the past and salute the present and future of Horace Mann School. Horace Mann Magazine is making these connections as well, in this issue and in the one to come, by offering a look at Horace Mann School’s legacy through reflections by alumni who have learned and “lived” at the school, and by linking their experiences to those of students here today. In this issue you will find a brief overview of Horace Mann School’s history, and within it, essays on aspects of the school’s curriculum. Highlighted are recent initiatives aimed at fulfilling HM’s mission of preparing “a diverse community of students… to lead great and giving lives.” Shared in the following pages are reflections from alumni on math studies, the John Dorr Nature Laboratory, and on experiences in music and in theater. Author Don Maggin ’44 contributed a memory on music; Halley Feiffer ’03 on her theater experiences at Horace Mann. The care Horace Mann School devotes to diversity issues is manifested in a recently established Office of Diversity dedicated to incorporating diversity into every fiber of the school. HM has also expanded its definition of community service to encompass service learning, with the ethical and intellectual elements this approach brings to making service a lifelong pursuit. The Fall 2012 issue of Horace Mann Magazine will continue its coverage of the school’s 125 years, focusing on other key aspects of Horace Mann School’s curriculum, including English, science, art, athletics and more. We look forward, most, to sharing additional reflections on friendships formed at Horace Mann School among students, on the experience of being a Horace Mann School parent committed to contributing to school life, and on the siblings and several generations within Horace Mann School families who share with the entire Horace Mann School community the legacy of its 125 years.
